The Tale of a King

Calon is a cheerful man who only has one aspiration to live up to. Be the Chosen One’s luggage boy. Though he isn’t an outstanding human being in any way, the fact that he is a companion of the Chosen One gives him status. He is respected amongst the villagers throughout the land and is often seen as the ultimate servant. Of course that is all that he is, a servant. When he was alone with the Chosen One he was treated like trash. He did everything, cooked, shined the armor, sharpened the sword and arrows, and even was the one who found fresh water and hunted and gathered food. Even after all of this, Calon enjoys what he does because he gets to be around the prophesied savior of the world.  The one who is going to overthrow the Evil King and save the land from his tyranny.

The Chosen One and Calon would wander the countryside fighting off wolves and bandits on their way from the small village that they are from, to the capital. In truth they were friends during their childhood until the Chosen One was taken to train by the Elders. Throughout the many years that the Chosen One was away training, Calon lived his life of farming and being considered the smartest of all the children in the village, he was expected to do great things. Many thought he was going to be the one to bring wealth and prosperity to their village, but when Calon grew old enough to be voted in as mayor, the Chosen One selected him to be his companion on his journey to defeat the evil king. To this Calon was more than happy to accept. He had never traveled and was overjoyed with the chance to see the world.

Calon started out excited, both because he was getting to hangout with his old friend again and because he was getting to be the companion of the Chosen One. It quickly became apparent that is old friend had grown into a self-centered person who couldn’t be bothered with menial labor. This surprised him, since he expected the Chosen One to have been more down-to-earth. It didn’t bother Calon too much though, because everything he was getting to see and do was unimaginable. The massive mountains, the vast deserts, water as far as the eye can see, plains so flat that you can see for miles. These weren’t things that he would ever get to see back at the village.

After many weeks of traveling they finally approached the capital, Hranafall. It was a sprawling city with massive walls. Calon followed the Chosen One through the front gate, through the crowded streets, and up the castle. This is when the Chosen One showed his powers. He pulled out and the swung his sword and the guards in one movement and a powerful gust blew them and gate to the castle open. He ran inside knocking back each guard that attempted to stop him. Eventually the Chosen One reached the Evil King. The battle that ensued was an intense one with each trading blows. As it turned out, their powers were equally matched. After many hours of constant battling, the Chosen One finally defeated the Evil King. After seeing their king defeated the guards, not knowing what to do, bowed down to the victor. That is when the Chosen One took the crown from the now deceased evil king and put it on Calon who was still standing outside the gate of the castle.

Not sure exactly with what was happening, Calon asked the Chosen One, “What’s going on? Aren’t you supposed to become the new king create a new and prosperous kingdom?” To which the Chosen One replied, “The prophecy is only that I would defeat the Evil King, not that I would take his place and become the next king. Anyways, throughout our travels you have proven to be a much better person than I. The people of the village wanted you to become the mayor because of how smart and likeable you are. You are much more fit to be king than I could ever be.” With that the Chosen One and Calon walked to the throne and Calon became King Calon. He would rule over the land and forever be known as Calon the Great for he would bring prosperity to his kingdom.

The Greatest Hero

I am going to tell you the story of how a young man saved humanity from the greatest threat it has ever seen. The young man, his name was Tolo. Tolo was a small man who lived in a house that was dug into the side of a hill. It was a very nice hole home, and anyone who came to the countryside and saw his home, knew exactly whose home it was. This future hero was to be met by the towns alchemist in the coming days. There had been some strange phenomenons happening around Tolo’s home and he wanted to find out what it was.

The story starts off when the alchemist reaches Tolo’s home.

*knock knock*

“Tolo, are ya home?!”

Tolo jumped up from his comfy couch and ran over to the door, but before reaching the door, fixed a doily. Finally, he reached and opened the door.

“Welcome alchemist. I’ve been needing your opinion on the strange happenings I’ve had around my house. I’ve been told that my home is cursed, but I don’t believe in superstitions.”

“Ahh, but superstitions bring about questions. These end up creating a thirst for knowledge.”

“True, although it’s all just a bunch of hog wash.”

“I agree. Anyway, I was told that some of your things have been moving without being touched. We haven’t had any earthquakes so I’m not sure why things would move. I will need to do some research on this place.” the alchemist turned away from Tolo

“That’s fine with me.” Tolo said as he began to turn and walk back into his home.

“I just want to know one thing, Tolo. Have you really found out a way to turn copper into gold?” The alchemist asked, not turning towards Tolo.

“You will have your answer if you help me with this mystery.”

The alchemist walked away, but he would be back. No alchemist can turn down the possible knowledge of changing one element into another. Tolo knew this, for he himself was an alchemist and a good one at that. He had dug a laboratory deep into the hill so that all of his research could be kept quiet. Transmuting elements was not something men needed to know how to do.

The next day, the alchemist came back, and this time, with a bunch of books. He and Tolo spent hours trying to analyze why things would move around randomly. They had read some fifteen different books on the strange happenings. It intrigued them that if they paid enough attention to an object, you could see the subtle movement of it. Though they hadn’t come to any conclusions about what might be happening, Tolo started to imagine small creatures moving his stuff around. This is when it all began, the realization that an alien invasion could be upon them. Because, indeed there were actual small beings moving stuff ever so slightly.

“Do you see what I’m seeing?” Tolo asked the alchemist.

“I don’t, but if you might have magnifying glass. I would be able to see it.”

“Yeah I do. I’ll be right back.” Tolo disappeared into his lab and came back rather quickly. He gave the alchemist the magnifying glass, and together they looked at the small creatures. The creatures looked rather frightened. They scattered behind objects.

“Those weren’t ants, were they?” Tolo asked the alchemist.

“No, they looked like small humans. I wonder if they’re afraid of us?” pondered the alchemist.

“It looked like they were, but I’m more curious about where they ran off to.”

The two began to look around the house to try to find the little guys. It turned out to be quite a feat since the creatures were so tiny. After hours and hours of diligent searching, Tolo noticed one and said, “I think I found one.” He tried to sneak up on it to try to catch it, but the creatures noticed him and scurried away in between a shelf and the wall. Tolo and the alchemist looked at each other amazed since the crack in between the shelf and the wall was smaller than the creature. They couldn’t figure out how he had gotten through, or even why.

“We need to get one of those creatures to find out why they are here.”

“I have an idea. I’ve gotta go.” the alchemist ran out of Tolo’s house almost before Tolo could turn around.

“Bye!” Tolo yelled.

Tolo stared at the wall where the creature went through and noticed a small crack. It was glowing, but ever so slightly. Upon noticing this, Tolo’s house shook. When Tolo looked back at the crack, it was no longer glowing. “What was that glowing?” he though.

The next the alchemist came knocking at Tolo’s door very earlier in the morning. A groggy Tolo answered the door to a tired yet excited alchemist.

“You have to see this!” exclaimed the alchemist.

“See what?”

“This.” The alchemist pulled out a bottle that resembled the glow from the wall.

“I’ve seen that before.”

“I saw it last night through the magnifying glass and remembered that I had been working on something that could give me eternal life. However, I would always appear in some strange place when I would drink it, and then wake back up on my floor. Maybe you should try it. You might have better luck.”

Tolo analyzed the weird-looking bottle, opened it up, and chugged it. The next thing he knew was that he was not in his house anymore, but instead, in some black and white place. Small creatures walked up to him. They looked like the same creatures that had been in his home.

“Were you just in my home?” Tolo asked.

“If you were that big scary creature, then yes. But, if you are the same large creature, why are you so small now and how did you get here?” one of the creatures asked him.

“I drank a bottle of glowing liquid.”

“Give us the glowing liquid and we won’t be back to your world.”

“Why should I?”

“Because the glowing liquid is merging our two universes together and if it continues, it is prophesied to be the end of both planets.”

“I don’t usually believe in prophecies, but because of this place. I’ll believe you.”  Tolo said and handed over the bottle of glowing liquid.

“Thank you!” the creature said.

Tolo then appeared laying on the ground in his home.

“Are you okay?” the alchemist asked.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Just don’t ever make that liquid again.”

“I won’t.”

The two talked a bit longer and Tolo kept up his end of the bargain and showed the alchemist how to transmute materials into other materials. Although the alchemist didn’t realize that he was just making pyrite, or fools gold. The alchemist left, Tolo went back to his lab, and humanity was saved. Until next time….

Strange New World

It’s been a long time since I’ve felt the breeze of fresh air hitting my golden tan skin. I’ve been locked away inside that metal prison for far too long and all I can think of is how nice it is to be out of there.

“Welcome to your new home everyone!” says captain Abbey. “We have finally found a planet that is suitable for us to call home.”

Earth had become too dangerous for humans to live on. People were dying as soon as they left their homes, or so the legends go… And that’s what the news stations were reporting as the lucky people made it to one of the many GAIA Ships. I personally don’t remember that since I was so young. However, my family and I were outside and I didn’t die. Well at least I didn’t  anyway. My parents did. My dad died shortly after I was born while my mother died of injuries she sustained trying to get me aboard the ship.

We were adrift in space for 15 years before we found this planet that captain Abbey says is the closest thing to Earth that we’re going to find.

“We are going to have to start farming and cultivating this planet if we are to survive. The sooner we start doing this, the better.”

The air seems so fresh, not quite the way I remember the razor like winds back on Earth. It kind of hurt. But, this wind is gentle. It’s nice. I was told that humans had destroyed Earth and inevitably made it uninhabitable for us to continue living there. I hope that we don’t make the same mistakes on this planet that we made on Earth.

“What’s the name of this planet?” I asked the captain.

“We are calling it Gaia after the name of the ship that we used to get here.” the captain explained. “Come on people we need to get to farming and building houses ASAP!”

The scariest thing about moving somewhere that you don’t know anything about, is that you’re not sure what kinds of things might live there. They fear of something lurking in the shadows, watching your every move is a very scary thought. The forests here have such tall trees and the shadows are everywhere around us.

“It’s getting dark, everyone back on the ship for the night!” Abbey called out. “We will resume construction in the morning.”

Darkness descended on the planet for the first time since we arrived and it was beautiful. The forest lit up from glowing plant life and from insects flying around. The research party went out to conduct experiments to get a better understanding of the world that’s around us.

The world outside, although scary. Seemed calm and so peaceful, while in the ship it seems chaotic. People are running around yelling out orders to get supplies around  the ship and to get ready for tomorrow’s tasks. Children are screaming and crying. This realization makes me afraid that we might destroy the beautiful serenity that this world enjoys.

Tomorrow I will go out and break my fear of the shadows in the forest. I will find out what makes this planet seem so peaceful.

I awoke today to a strange sound coming through my window. It was a bird singing and it surprised me to see a bird on this planet. According to the researchers, this planet has much wildlife that is similar to what used to exist back on Earth.

I decided to go out into the forest just as the researchers had done last night. I just need to find out what is out there for myself.

Walking into the forest is really intimidating with the tall trees and with it being so dark. With bugs flying around everywhere, the fresh air in here almost seems fresher than back around the ship. Monkey-like creatures swinging from tree to tree.

I walked deeper into the forest to satisfy my need for adventure. I got quite far into the forest when I started to hear a load roaring noise. As I got closer to the noise I saw water flowing quickly, so I followed it to a point where it fell off a cliff. The view from the cliff was amazing, The tops of the trees were visible for as far as my eyes could see.

Heading back I noticed that things definitely started to change. Darkness brought with it a scary sense of danger. I started to run, but tripped over a tree root that protruded from the ground. Looking around the trees seemed to grow faces. Fearing for my life, I jumped back on my feet and continued to run as fast as I could, making sure I didn’t trip on another root.

Finally escaping from the forest, I entered the ship to find only a handful of people there. Apparently others had gone into the forest just like me, thought they hadn’t returned like me. This is definitely a strange new world.

New “Driver”

Finally! I passed my drivers test. It took me three tries which might sound like a lot although it’s really not. Well that and that it was for my space ship license.  The only reason that I didn’t pass my first two times was because when I would reenter the atmosphere, I would reenter a little too shaky and things would get flung everywhere. My spaceship is a Boeing Spark. In the past, Boeing was an airplane company. Now it and many other companies switched from airplane only to spaceship making. Anyway, my spaceship is very economically efficient since I get 25,000 miles to the gallon. However i can only get up to 200,000 miles per hour maximum.

Well now that I have my license, I am going to a friends house on Mars, It’s not that far of a distance from Deimos since its a Martian moon. It’s a start to driving on my own which is why I’m making this venture. While entering the atmosphere of Mars, I start to notice that because I had taken my spaceship test on Earth, the thicker atmosphere had caused me to shake when entering. However, because of Mars’ thinner atmosphere, I didn’t shake when entering the atmosphere. As it turns out am having a very easy time getting to the planet of Mars. Landing however is going to be tricky.

The reason for this is that when humans colonized Mars around 200 years ago, they built biomes with which they could breathe and farm and create civilization. Thousands of these dot the martian landscape from space. The things are massive when you start getting close to them. I mean they have to be to allow for farming and house thousands of people. I have to park my Spark outside the biome in a parking lot like area where hundreds of others are parked as well. Entering the massive structure is something you don’t really expect when viewing it from the outside. Everywhere you look, there are people wondering the streets and outdoor vendors trying to sell you their products. Two and sometimes three story houses line the streets. I walked up to the one my friend lived in and we hung out for a couple of Martian hours. But, when I was about to leave, an alarm went off alerting everyone that a dust storm was approaching us. At this moment I think I’m just gonna go to the nearby coffee shop and wait out the storm. The storm sounded like an earth train blasting around the massive structure. The coffee was surprisingly good and I really enjoyed my stay. Leaving, the dirt still lingered in the Martian air which is going to make this harder to get back home than i had originally planned. The dirt in the air is really not a big problem, but it was an unforeseen obstacle. The reason is because I hadn’t seen the dust storm on the news. Now I’m just going to have to make some adjustments.

Exiting is turning out to be much easier than I thought. Nothing is going wrong, and all I have to do is make it to my house on Deimos. My house is inside an almost glass-like structure that contains oxygen. unlike the biomes on Mars, its only for one house and some farmland. I get back to my house and this time I have to deploy the landing gear. Everything is going better than expected, I can’t believe it. I put the key in the keyhole and look back at my spaceship one last time to see it rolling… I had forgot to put the brake on. I stop it, luckily before it left the moon. I walk back over to the door to my glass-like biome, put my key in the door, and then enter. I am finally home from a pretty much successful day of driving.

The Decay

The gray misty skies seem like the norm ever since The Decay began. That’s what my teachers at school call it anyway. My parents actually died during the event, however I survived because I was rescued by the dean of the boarding school that I attend. This decay was not of the Earth, it was however a decay of the human civilization. Mother Nature had begun reclaiming her domain from us.

I live in the city of Ectopolis at the Sampson’s School for boys. It was created to help children such as myself be able to survive in this anti-human world. The weapons that we had previously used to kill each other, are almost useless when combating plants.

I know that you’re probably thinking about napalm and flamethrowers and pesticides. Well these plants have evolved to so that pesticides no longer work on them. However, fire still does work even though they usually put them out with fluids they secrete, or use the flames against us by swinging around and dropping flaming leaves on us.

Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you that our city is surrounded by a wall and the ground is covered in cement. Trees and grass are a thing of the passed for us, although we grow genetically altered vegetables just like we’ve been doing for centuries. No ones sure what caused the new anti-human plants to exist. All we know is that when the asteroid hit, the Decay started.
Legends say that the asteroid is like a castle surrounded by the largest and most powerful plants in the world. These plants have tainted the plants around the world and caused them attack humans and destroy all of our creations.

The dean told me that my parents died a noble death, protecting me from the plants that surrounded us. When he showed up, he told me that the plants were salivating on my bald white head as I cried. I was still an infant at this time and the dean was most likely using a weapon similar to what we’ve been training with. These weapons are plasma rifles that burn through anything and burn the green earth.

The reason that we use plasma rifles to destroy the plants has to do with the fact that they can’t deal with the super heated blasts and today we are going to test out the plasma cannon. This is going to be so much fun. This cannon is going to be used to decimate large areas of tainted plant growth. We are going to shoot it off of Kento Peak, which is the tallest peak in our region. If it works out, then we are going to try out building a plasma missile to destroy even more plants at a single time.

….IT WORKED!!!! The plants were completely eradicated from the face of our planet! Time will only tell when we finally reclaim this planet as ours! Our next mission is to create a missile to destroy the asteroid with…

…. What’s this?! Where did all these plants come from!? They’ve destroyed the cannon! How can this be!? It’s time for a tactical retreat, the dean says. I guess things aren’t always as easy as they seem. Just remember, you damn plants! WE WILL TAKE BACK WHAT IS OURS!

A mysterious voice echoed through my head saying that this is their planet and it always has been. They are just reclaiming it from us.

Are we the invaders? I don’t care at this point, they killed my parents and I cannot forgive them for that. I will fight them as long as I can, and I will never surrender!

Gunfight at the Bridgecreek Saloon

The galloping of horses through me off from what I was supposed to be doing. As I turned my attention back to what I was originally doing, I felt a beam of light whiz past me right ear. It felt so warm and I knew that this was trouble. My legs began to buckle and my lungs felt like they tightened. i fell to my knees wondering, “Is this it?”

Hours before, I had entered this little town called Bridgecreek. It was a nice little town in the middle of nowhere, so I decided to enter the saloon to get a drink. I asked the bartender for a cold one and he sent it down my way. Everything was fine, until they showed up. The Percy gang was notorious in many parts of the Back Country for being a rowdy group of hooligans that preyed on small towns like this.

The one that I guess was there leader pulled out his gun and fired it into the ceiling. “Who’s ready for a little fun!?” he yelled in his hick accent. His lackey’s laughing the whole time.

I stood up, like many of the other guys in the bar, and said, “Leave, before things get messy!”

“I like when things get messy!” the gang leader said with a evil grin. He pulled out his gun and shot at me but missed.

I kicked over a table and hid behind it while shooting back, as did many of the other guys in the bar. The gang members were getting picked off one by one. Eventually the last of their group rallied and left. We started to cheer and celebrate our winning with free beer and dancing.

I left feeling great, although I had just killed a few people that could’ve had lives if they hadn’t chosen the path that they took. Anyway, the gunfight had apparently attracted a nearby military convoy and they came over as fast as they could. I was so drunk that they thought that I had been the one being the bad guy.

The lieutenant in the squad yelled at me, “Put your hands in the air or we will shoot you where you stand.”

I was too drunk to even understand what they were saying, I continued to stumble and each way and I guess they saw my hand come close to my gun because they all raised their guns and took aim. I was still wondering what this galloping of horses was

“I warned you!” The lieutenant yelled and then shot his gun, the first bullet passed my face, nicking my cheek, and I saw a stream of light along with the bullet. He fired again and this time it hit me directly in the stomach. I fell to my knees and that is where I laid, bleeding… Until a nearby doctor saw what had happened and took me into his office. He doctored me up pretty good. I’m better now.

Now I want revenge!

To My Surprise

‘Insatiable thirst’ is all I could think about, while I was walking home from school. Those two words stayed with me for awhile and I didn’t know why. Had I, in a past life or something like that, die from dehydration? Or is this like some vision that I will die of dehydration in the future? It’s probably nothing more than something that I thought was interesting.

My name is Gerald Flassinger, and I’m a Sophomore in high school. Everyone around me seems to think that I’m smart because of how I look, but my friends know that I’m not as smart as others think I am. I am very nerdy, however, and I collect comic books and play video games when I’m not with friends.

Anyways, let’s start the story. When I finally reached my home, I found a note laying on my front porch. Almost immediately, my thoughts about insatiable thirst disappeared because the note took me by so much surprise. The note said, “Hello! You (the reader) have been chosen for an adventure. Just meet me at Springers park at 5:30 Tuesday night.” I realized tonight was Tuesday night and an adventure would definitely take me away from my current mundane life. I flipped the note over to see if it was addressed to my parents or someone else, but it had no name on it.

After several minutes of deliberation, I decided I would go to see what was up with the note and if it was true or not. 5:30 came and went and I was left walking around Springers park for minutes before realizing that it might actually be a prank or something. Suddenly a beam of light comes down around me and I get pulled up. Thinking that I must’ve just been abducted by aliens, instead, the government ended up picking me up and told me that by following their instructions, I will be training for interplanetary warfare.

I guess that we are going to war soon and my government is preparing for war…. with “Earth”.

My planet, Mexxar is not usually considered a military power. However, we are considered an economic power and we tend to resist Earth’s imperial grasp with much luck. Earth has decided that because their shrewdness and deceptiveness have not worked on us to bend to their ways. They have decided to attack us, and I am to help with the defense of Mexxar. I am only a Sophomore in high school and my government has chosen me to be a commander in the defense of Mexxar.
